Gold IRA Storage Explained

Reviewed August 21, 2026 · Bullion Blueprint Editorial Desk

How approved depository storage works and why IRA metals are different from personally held bullion.

Financial/YMYL notice: This page is general education, not individualized investment, tax or legal advice. Verify current rules and provider terms before acting.

Why storage exists in the structure

IRA-owned metals are held for the retirement account rather than simply delivered to the account holder. The IRS collectible exception for certain bullion refers to physical possession by a bank or approved non-bank trustee.

Depository choices

Providers and custodians may offer different depositories and storage arrangements. Ask whether storage is segregated or commingled, how insurance is described, how audits are handled, and how an in-kind distribution would work.

Home storage deserves special caution

Marketing around 'home storage IRAs' can blur the distinction between personal bullion and IRA assets. Because the tax consequences can be significant, do not rely on sales copy when interpreting custody requirements.

Compare more than the annual fee

Storage cost matters, but so do access procedures, distribution logistics, custodian compatibility and documentation. Verify each item in writing.

Before you act

  • Verify the source account or IRA transaction is eligible.
  • Request the current written fee schedule and transaction quote.
  • Identify the dealer, IRA custodian and depository separately.
  • Confirm product eligibility and distribution procedures.
  • Consider qualified tax, legal or financial advice for your circumstances.
