The rollover restrictions, deadlines and exceptions that matter before funds are moved.

Start with eligibility

Not every distribution can be rolled over, and employer plans can impose their own distribution conditions. Confirm the source plan's rules before assuming funds are movable.

Direct movement is usually simpler

The IRS describes direct rollovers from employer plans and trustee-to-trustee transfers between IRAs. If an eligible distribution is paid to you, a 60-day rollover window can apply, and employer-plan distributions paid to you can be subject to mandatory withholding.

Know the one-rollover rule

The IRS one-rollover-per-year limitation applies to certain IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollovers. It does not apply to trustee-to-trustee IRA transfers, plan-to-IRA rollovers, plan-to-plan rollovers, or traditional-to-Roth conversions.

Do not let the metal purchase drive the tax decision

First establish the correct account movement. Only after the receiving self-directed IRA is properly funded should the investment decision about eligible metals be made. A provider can help with paperwork, but tax treatment is governed by the applicable rules.

Before you act

  • Verify the source account or IRA transaction is eligible.
  • Request the current written fee schedule and transaction quote.
  • Identify the dealer, IRA custodian and depository separately.
  • Confirm product eligibility and distribution procedures.
  • Consider qualified tax, legal or financial advice for your circumstances.
