Understand how self-directed precious-metals IRAs work, what they can hold, and the main decisions involved.

What a Gold IRA actually is

A Gold IRA is not a separate tax category. In practice, the term usually describes a self-directed IRA that is administered by a custodian willing to hold eligible precious metals. The account still operates under IRA rules, while the investment menu and operational steps differ from a conventional brokerage IRA.

The basic structure

The typical chain is: open the self-directed IRA, fund it with an eligible contribution, transfer or rollover, select IRA-eligible metals, and have the metals held through the account's approved custody and storage arrangement. The metal is an asset of the IRA rather than ordinary personal property while it remains in the account.

What can go wrong

The biggest conceptual mistakes are treating every gold product as IRA-eligible, confusing personal possession with IRA custody, and assuming a rollover is automatically tax-free regardless of method. Those details deserve verification before money moves.

How to compare providers

Compare the whole operating system: account minimums, published fees, custodian arrangements, storage choices, product eligibility, transaction process, liquidation/distribution procedures, and the quality of disclosures. A low headline fee does not answer every decision.

Before you act

  • Verify the source account or IRA transaction is eligible.
  • Request the current written fee schedule and transaction quote.
  • Identify the dealer, IRA custodian and depository separately.
  • Confirm product eligibility and distribution procedures.
  • Consider qualified tax, legal or financial advice for your circumstances.
